I’m a Moscow-based American journalist who has written for The Atlantic, GQ, the Guardian, MAXIM, The Nation, The New York Times, POLITICO, The Telegraph, TIME and Slate, among others.
In a decade here, I’ve reported from the coldest permanently inhabited place on earth, the frontlines of the war in eastern Ukraine, Arctic towns frequented by polar bears and Russian outposts in Syria.
My focus is on conservation and the climate crisis, nuclear arms and energy and all things Arctic.
I speak fluent Russian and have appeared frequently on television and radio in the US and UK. My work has won awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and Milwaukee Press Club, and I was a 2019 Logan Nonfiction Program fellow.
